Solo Parenthood: Sophie’s Journey Through IVF and Motherhood
Sophie spent her 30s enjoying life but worried about not becoming a parent as she neared 40. She felt the pressure of a ticking clock. Sophie tried to conceive on her own through IUI but experienced a miscarriage. She then froze her eggs and chose IVF. In 2021, she had a successful frozen embryo transfer while dating a same-sex partner. This partner is now the legal parent of her child, Martha. Despite this, Sophie sees herself as a solo parent.
During her pregnancy and after Martha’s birth, Sophie did not regret her decision. Some people questioned her choice, including a consultant who expressed concern about raising a child alone. Sophie respected the consultant’s opinion but believes she and Martha share a strong, special bond. She feels they have a stable life together.
Sophie told Martha about her conception and plans to be open about it as Martha grows and understands more. However, single parenthood is challenging. Sophie faces decisions and worries alone, without someone to share ideas with. Despite the challenges, she feels strong, especially during tough times like when Martha is sick and she hasn’t slept.
