Solomon Islands Commits to Combat Gender-Based Violence at Beijing +30 Conference
Solomon Islands Focuses on Gender-Based Violence
The Solomon Islands has committed to tackling gender-based violence. Vaela Falefehi Devesi, the Director of Women at the Ministry of Women, Youth, Children and Family Affairs, spoke at the Ministerial Conference on the Beijing +30 Review in Bangkok. She emphasized the need for collaboration with Pacific nations to fight violence against women and girls.
Devesi stated, “We need increased and coordinated efforts with neighboring countries and regional organizations like the Pacific Islands Forum and the Pacific Community.” She highlighted the importance of including women’s voices in decision-making.
Despite this commitment, efforts against gender-based violence face challenges, especially in rural areas. Limited resources hinder the delivery of services where they are most needed.
Climate change and natural disasters also complicate these efforts. Devesi said, “Expanding our services into rural areas poses challenges due to climate change and natural disasters.” She stressed the importance of having support systems that are resilient and flexible.
The enforcement of the Family Protection Act is another challenge in responding to gender-based violence. Devesi remains confident, assuring the conference that the Solomon Islands will continue to work towards eliminating violence and enhancing women’s rights.
The Ministerial Conference, held in Bangkok from November 19 to 21, gathered civil society organizations, young feminists, and government representatives. They discussed strategies to implement the Beijing Declaration and support gender equality.
This initiative received support from the UN Women Fiji Multi-Country Office.
