Somalia Condemns Israel’s Recognition of Somaliland, Citing Regional instability
Somali president Hassan Sheikh Mohamud has strongly denounced Israel’s recent decision to recognize Somaliland as an autonomous state, characterizing the move as a ”threat to the security and stability of the world and the region.” The statement, delivered during an emergency parliamentary session, reflects Somalia’s deep concern over the potential ramifications of this unprecedented diplomatic shift.
Israel Makes History with Somaliland Recognition
On Friday, december 27, 2025, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced Israel’s recognition of Somaliland, making it the first country to do so. Mohamud labeled the declaration a “blunt aggression against the sovereignty, independence, territorial integrity, and the unity of the peopel of the Somali Republic.” This decision breaks decades of international protocol, as most nations continue to recognize Somaliland as part of Somalia.
Somaliland’s Decades-Long Pursuit of recognition
Somaliland initially declared its independence from Somalia in 1991, following the collapse of Siad Barre’s government and the ensuing civil war. Despite functioning as a de facto independent state with its own currency, passports, and a functioning army, Somaliland has faced significant hurdles in gaining widespread international recognition. Its strategic location on the Gulf of Aden has made it a key player in regional maritime security, but this hasn’t translated into diplomatic acceptance.
Widespread Regional Condemnation
The Israeli decision has triggered a wave of condemnation across the Middle East and Africa. Somalia’s government immediately denounced the move as a “deliberate attack” on its sovereignty. The African Union also voiced strong objections. further amplifying the regional disapproval, Egypt, Turkey, the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC), and the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) have all issued statements condemning Israel’s recognition of Somaliland.
The situation remains fluid, and the long-term consequences of israel’s decision are yet to be seen. However, the strong reactions from Somalia and its allies underscore the sensitivity of the issue and the potential for increased regional tensions.
