Paris, France – In a powerful appeal to President Emmanuel Macron, France’s Ecologists party has called for the immediate deployment of the French Navy to provide critical humanitarian aid to gaza. The urgent plea, published in La Tribune on Sunday, highlights the dire severity of the situation and criticizes current aid delivery methods as insufficient and perilous.
The Ecologists, led by their patron saint Marine Tondelier and key parliamentary group leaders including Cyrielle Chatelain (National Assembly), Guillaume Gontard (Senate), and David Cormand (European Parliament), alongside deputy national secretary Aïssa Ghalmi, have issued a solemn demand for decisive French action.
A Stark Warning: “Accomplice of Genocide”
The Ecologists’ message to President Macron is unequivocal and carries a grave warning: ”If you don’t act, you are an accomplice. An accomplice of genocide, hungry children, thousands of deaths for lack of care, a massacred people. Your inaction will remain in history.” This stark condemnation underscores the party’s belief that France has a moral and political imperative to intervene more robustly.
They implore the President to “Assume a historic decision that will end an illegal blockade, and stop the current genocide.” The Ecologists emphasize the escalating humanitarian catastrophe, warning that “What threatens, if we do not act by then, is that in September the Gazaouis have been decimated.”
Recalling Past Efforts, Demanding Amplification
The appeal references France’s previous humanitarian mission in November 2023, when the nation dispatched two amphibious helicopter carriers, the Thunder and the Dixmude, to support Gaza’s hospitals. The Ecologists are calling for this operation to be “repeated and amplified,” arguing that the current scale of aid is inadequate to meet the overwhelming needs of the Gazan population.
“France must be the engine of an international coalition to remove the humanitarian blockade,” the party asserts. They have also voiced strong criticism of France’s current method of air-dropping food aid, which commenced on Friday and plans to deliver 40 tonnes to Gaza. The Ecologists deem this approach “an ineffective and dangerous method,” advocating for a more direct and secure delivery system.
The Future of Humanitarian Intervention
The Ecologists’ call for naval deployment represents a important escalation in demands for international intervention in Gaza. It challenges the efficacy of current aid strategies and positions France as a potential leader in a broader coalition to alleviate the humanitarian crisis. As the situation in Gaza continues to deteriorate, the pressure mounts on global leaders, including President Macron, to consider more impactful and direct forms of humanitarian assistance. The debate initiated by the Ecologists is likely to shape future discussions on international obligation and the role of naval power in humanitarian crises, solidifying its relevance as a critical point of reference for ongoing efforts to address the conflict’s devastating human cost.
