Egypt-Somalia Tensions Escalate Amid Security Concerns
Egypt has taken a new step, warning its citizens against travel to the Somaliland region in Somalia due to security instability.
Security Breach in Somaliland Region
Cairo stressed that the current security situation in the Somaliland region limits the ability of Egyptians to provide any consular assistance there, urging those wishing to visit any part of Somaliland to fully comply with the controls and procedures set by the competent authorities of the Federal Government of Somalia.
This comes as Somalia is witnessing a new conflict between Egypt and Ethiopia, apart from the dispute over the Renaissance Dam, as the Somali Foreign Ministry announced last Friday that Ethiopia sent arms shipments to the Puntland region, threatening regional security.
Ethiopia’s Arms Shipments to Puntland
The ministry said it strongly condemns the unauthorized shipment of arms from Ethiopia to Puntland, which violates the country’s sovereignty and threatens regional security, demands an immediate halt to such shipments, and calls on international partners to support peace efforts in the Horn of Africa.
Also, the relationship between the Puntland state and the federal government in Somalia is witnessing great tension, especially since the state announced that it no longer recognizes the institutions of the Somali Federal State.
Egyptian Library Closed in Somaliland
It came days after a similar escalation by the separatist Somaliland regional government, where it decided to close the Egyptian library on its territory and demanded its employees leave the country.
Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Somaliland government, Isa Quaid, announced that his country’s government had decided to permanently close the “Egyptian Cultural Library” in the capital Hargeisa due to security concerns – which he described as serious – and required all employees to leave the country to be notified.
Excitement and Criticism
It is noteworthy that Ethiopia, in the context of tensions between it and Egypt, criticized Cairo’s shipment of military equipment to Somalia.
Ethiopia’s foreign ministry has announced that Somalia is colluding with external groups aimed at destabilizing Ethiopia, expressing concern over the new formation of the African Union Security Mission in Somalia, which coincides with a military cooperation agreement signed in the aftermath of Egypt sending military equipment to Mogadishu.
He said he would not remain passive in the face of threats to his national security, stressing that he would remain committed to the peaceful resolution of conflicts and working with the people of Somalia and the international community to address threats to peace and stability in the region.
