Dominant Bowling Performance Fuels Somerset’s Win
Somerset secured a crucial victory over Sussex, propelling them into second place in the league standings, level on points with leaders Yorkshire. The match, played on August 21,2025,saw a commanding bowling display from Somerset, spearheaded by a career-best performance from bowler Lammonby.
The sussex innings began poorly, with openers Archie Vaughan and Lammonby falling for ducks to the left-arm pace of Sean Hunt. Sussex struggled to build momentum, reaching 82-5 before a resilient partnership between Thomas and Hill offered some resistance. Thomas contributed 50 runs off 58 balls, adding 59 runs with Hill for the sixth wicket.
Hunt continued to trouble the Sussex batsmen, eventually finishing with remarkable figures of 3-35. Hill continued his strong form, reaching his second consecutive half-century, scoring 55 runs off 62 balls, and combining with Kian Roberts (29) for a 67-run stand. Though, Somerset ultimately bowled Sussex out midway through the 48th over.
Lammonby’s Breakthrough Performance
Lammonby was the star of the show with the ball, claiming a personal best of five wickets. After a disappointing start with the bat, being dismissed for a duck, Lammonby seized the prospect to make an impact with the ball.
After getting out third ball for a duck I wasn’t really expecting too much from the day. But I got the opportunity to get a few overs with a new-ish ball. It swung around early doors which helped me. I got lucky with the first one and then I found my rhythm a little bit more. I was very pleased to pick up my first five-for. Its a pretty cool and pretty special moment.
Lammonby
Lammonby’s success was built on exploiting early swing with the new ball, dismissing key Sussex batsmen including Charlie Tear, Fynn Hudson-Prentice, and John Simpson in fast succession. His inswinging deliveries proved particularly effective, disrupting Sussex’s batting lineup.
Sussex’s Batting Struggles Continue
Despite a brief period of stability, Sussex’s batting lineup faltered, with Tom Haines falling early. Tom Clark (34) and Jack Carson (35) offered some resistance, but wickets continued to tumble, leading to their third defeat. Henry Crocombe had earlier removed the Rew brothers, James and thomas, for 29 and 30 respectively.
The Sussex innings never truly gained momentum, and the consistent pressure applied by the Somerset bowlers ultimately proved too much to handle.
