Sony is pulling further back from physical media by ending shipments of its last standalone Blu-ray disc player in Japan, inc.com reported. The company has discontinued the UBP-X700/K model without announcing a successor, raising fresh questions about the long-term future of physical disc hardware.

Sony Discontinues the UBP-X700-K in Japan

Sony Japan made the quiet decision to pull its final dedicated Blu-ray player from the market. While U.S. versions of the UBP-X700 remain available at retail, Sony often initiates hardware phase-outs in Japan before expanding those changes globally. Sony did not reply to a request for comment regarding the future of standalone Blu-ray players in the United States.

The hardware withdrawal compounds a broader retreat from physical formats by the manufacturer. Sony announced plans earlier to stop producing physical game discs for all new PlayStation titles starting in January 2028. That shift arrived even though physical copies accounted for 15 percent of PlayStation games sold during the fourth quarter of the prior year, sparking pushback among players who rely on physical media.

The Evolving Landscape of Digital Licensing Disputes

Tensions over digital versus physical ownership intensified in September when Sony argued in an unrelated legal filing that digitally purchased games are not owned by consumers. The company stated that players purchase a revocable license rather than a permanent copy. That distinction highlights ongoing consumer concerns about media preservation as dedicated hardware disappears.

If Sony exits the Blu-ray hardware market entirely, Panasonic will remain the sole major electronics brand actively manufacturing the devices. Samsung exited the category in 2019, followed by LG ending production in 2024. Despite the dwindling hardware ecosystem, consumer spending on physical films remains active. According to the Digital Entertainment Group, sales of Blu-ray films and television shows rose 12 percent in 2025 compared to 2024, with aggregate spending climbing another 5.5 percent in the first half of 2026.

The January 2028 PlayStation Disc Cutoff

The next major milestone for Sony’s physical media reduction arrives in January 2028, when manufacturing ceases for physical game discs tied to new PlayStation releases. As hardware options narrow and software shifts entirely to digital distribution, consumer advocates and collectors continue to monitor how major tech firms handle media ownership and long-term access.
