Sony introduced its latest flagship smartphone, the Xperia 1 VIII, on May 13, 2026. The new device centers on a significant overhaul of its telephoto camera hardware and the introduction of a new visual design language.

The most prominent update is the transition in the telephoto camera system. Moving away from the continuous optical zoom found in previous generations, Sony has implemented a fixed 70mm telephoto lens, which provides a 2.9x optical zoom relative to the primary camera.

Enhanced Camera Hardware and Imaging

The Xperia 1 VIII features a triple-camera rear array where each lens possesses a 48MP resolution. The primary camera is a 24mm lens with an f/1.9 aperture and optical image stabilization (OIS), while the ultra-wide lens is 16mm with an f/2.0 aperture.

The new 48MP telephoto lens features an f/2.8 aperture and is equipped with a 1/1.56-inch sensor. This sensor is four times larger than the one used in the previous generation. According to Sony, this increase in size is intended to improve the quality of digital zoom and enhance performance when capturing images in low-light environments.

To complement the hardware, Sony integrated RAW multi-frame processing across all cameras. This technology is designed to reduce noise in minimal light conditions and increase the overall dynamic range of the images. The device also includes an AI Camera Assistant to help users with automatic photo settings.

The device is rounded out with a 12MP front-facing camera for selfies and video calls.

The ORE Design Language

Sony has departed from its previous consistent styling with the introduction of the ORE design. This new aesthetic is inspired by raw gemstones and the textures of natural materials.

The physical layout of the camera system has also changed. The previous vertical camera arrangement has been replaced by a square camera module positioned in the upper-left corner of the device’s rear.

The Xperia 1 VIII is available in four distinct color options:

• Graphite Black
• Iolite Silver
• Garnet Red
• Native Gold

Technical Specifications and Performance

The smartphone is powered by the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 chipset, which is built on a 3nm architecture. This processing power is supported by up to 16 GB of LPDDR5X RAM.

For internal storage, the device offers capacities up to 1 TB using UFS 4.1 technology. Sony has maintained the inclusion of a microSD slot, allowing users to expand their storage by up to an additional 2 TB.

In a move that distinguishes it from many other current flagship models, the Xperia 1 VIII retains a 3.5mm audio jack for wired headphones.

The visual experience is handled by a 6.5-inch OLED display. The screen features FHD+ resolution and an adaptive refresh rate that can reach up to 120Hz.

Pricing for the Xperia 1 VIII starts at approximately Rp 26 million.
