Sony Pictures is expanding its franchise reach by developing an animated feature film based on the Marvel anti-hero Venom. The project is being handled by Sony Pictures Animation, marking the character’s first foray into the animated medium.
The studio has appointed Zach Lipovsky and Adam B. Stein to direct the film. The duo previously directed the 2025 horror film Final Destination: Bloodlines.
Production for the animated project includes several veterans from the live-action Venom series. Amy Pascal, Avi Arad and Matt Tolmach are returning as producers.
Tom Hardy, who portrayed Eddie Brock and voiced Venom in the trio of live-action movies, is also involved in the project as a producer. Kelly Marcel, a frequent screenwriter for Hardy on the live-action films, is also serving as a producer.
Development and Creative Process
As of February 20, 2026, no writer has been officially attached to the project. To address this, Sony Pictures Animation is establishing a writers room to develop scripts and pitches for the film.
While Tom Hardy is confirmed as a producer, it remains unclear if he will return to provide the voice for Eddie Brock in this animated iteration.
Character and Studio Context
Venom was created by artist Todd McFarlane and writer Bill Michelinie. The character first appeared in 1988 in Amazing Spider-Man No. 300 and later received a solo comic in 1993.

The character previously appeared in live-action cinema in Sam Raimi’s Amazing Spider-Man 3, where he was played by Topher Grace. The 2018 solo Venom film, starring Hardy, earned $856 million worldwide.
Sony Pictures Animation brings a significant portfolio of superhero animation to this project, having produced Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse and Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, as well as the upcoming Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse.
The studio’s recent work also includes the blockbuster KPop Demon Hunters.
Additional Sony Projects
In addition to the animated Venom film, Sony is developing other projects. Zach Lipovsky and Adam B. Stein are also working on a movie based on the Metal Gear Solid franchise.
