Sony Pictures Entertainment has scheduled the global theatrical release of the Indian epic “Ramayana” for November 6, according to reporting by The Hollywood Reporter. The film, directed by filmmaker Nitesh Tiwari, will be distributed globally by Sony outside of India, while producer Prime Focus Studios and Dharma Distribution will handle the domestic Indian release, which is timed to coincide with the Diwali festivities.
Global Distribution and Release Schedule
Sony Pictures will release the first half of the planned two-part series worldwide on November 6, which lands two days ahead of its domestic theatrical rollout in India. Prime Focus Studios founder Namit Malhotra is producing the project, utilizing the visual effects backing of DNEG, an Oscar-winning studio known for its work on Denis Villeneuve’s Dune
films and Christopher Nolan’s Interstellar
and Tenet
.
The film occupies a crowded box-office weekend in early November. Competing releases slated for that same timeframe include Warner Bros.’ animated adaptation of Dr. Seuss’ The Cat in the Hat,
Toho and GKids’ Godzilla Minus Zero,
MGM’s Sylvester Stallone biopic I Play Rocky,
Searchlight’s Wild Horse Nine,
and a one-week limited engagement from Apple for Sian Heder’s Being Heumann.
Despite the heavy slate, Ramayana
is positioned to draw substantial turnout from international diaspora audiences, following the path paved by previous blockbuster exports from India such as RRR
and Kalki 2898 A.D.

Cast, Production, and Creative Team
The adaptation of the foundational Hindu text written more than 2,500 years ago by the poet Valmiki stars Ranbir Kapoor as the exiled prince Rama and Sai Pallavi as his consort Sita, with Yash featured as the demon king Ravana. The narrative follows Rama through his years of exile into catastrophe, culminating in Sita’s abduction by Ravana and the ensuing war between righteousness and evil.
The production features an international creative team that includes Oscar-winning composers Hans Zimmer and A.R. Rahman providing the score, alongside action choreography by Terry Notary and Guy Norris. Production design is handled by Ramsey Avery and Ravi Bansal. Furthermore, Ramayana
is the first Indian production to secure the Filmed for Imax
label as the premium format company expands its footprint into the Indian film market.

For generations, the Ramayana has inspired people through its timeless humanity and enduring values. Our ambition has always been to honor that legacy while creating a cinematic experience worthy of audiences everywhere,
Namit Malhotra told Tempo in July. The project has received substantial overseas marketing, including a trailer debut at San Diego Comic-Con this past July. With Sony backing its international rollout in multiple languages tailored to local markets, Tiwari’s film aims to bring the ancient epic to a wide worldwide audience.
