Sony Sets 2027 Release Dates for 24 Jump Street and Ridley Scott’s Treasure Island
Sony Sets Late 2027 Theatrical Slate for Major Releases
Sony Pictures announced its updated release schedule on September 30, 2026, during Cinema United’s Fall Summit, as reported by Deadline. The studio confirmed that Ridley Scott’s “Treasure Island” will open in theaters on November 11, 2027. The project stars Hugh Jackman as the pirate Long John Silver, alongside Hugh Grant and Owen Cooper. Jack Thorne wrote the script for the new adaptation, which follows a young boy who uncovers a map to a buried treasure and embarks on a sea voyage, leading to a confrontation with Silver. Scott and Michael Pruss are producing the film through their Scott Free banner, with Deadline noting the film takes the Veterans Day corridor because it goes into production first.
Additionally, Sony locked in a December 10, 2027, release date for “24 Jump Street,” as detailed by Deadline and TheWrap. Filmmaker Rodney Rothman, who directed “Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse,” is set to direct the comedy sequel from a screenplay he co-wrote with Jonah Hill and Meghan Malloy. Original stars Channing Tatum, Jonah Hill, and Ice Cube are all returning to reprise their roles from the previous films in the R-rated franchise. Neal H. Moritz joins Lord, Miller, Tatum, and Hill as a producer.
Acquisitions and Action Features Expand 2027 Schedule
The studio added two more titles to its 2027 calendar following festival acquisitions and development updates. “The Surgeon,” a Thunder Road and Tango film that Sony picked up out of the Toronto International Film Festival, is slated to open on April 2, 2027, according to Deadline. Directed by Roshan Sethi, the film stars Michelle Yeoh as an expert surgeon who is abducted and forced to operate on a mysterious patient, utilizing her medical expertise to outwit her captors in a fight for survival. Producers on the project include Basil Iwanyk, Erica Lee, and Diarmaid McGrath of Thunder Road, alongside Tim Headington, Lia Buman, and Neil Shah of Tango, Steve Klinsky, Adam Kolbrenner of Lit Entertainment Group, John Schoenfelder, and Russell Ackerman.
The studio also scheduled “Narcs” for August 20, 2027. John Phillips is set to direct the drama in his feature directorial debut, working from a screenplay by Jordan and Justin Shipley that received a rewrite by Phillips and Gene Stupnitsky, per TheWrap and Deadline reporting. The film stars Mason Thames and Ella Bright, with Gene Stupnitsky producing via Big Name Entertainment alongside Robert Lamonaca as executive producer, and John Phillips and Joseph Micucci also serving as EPs.
Calendar Shifts Move Helldivers and Grandgear to 2028
Sony also shuffled existing titles on its upcoming release calendar, pushing back one major video game adaptation while pulling another project forward. Justin Lin’s adaptation of the PlayStation video game “Helldivers,” starring Alan Ritchson, has moved from November 10, 2027, to a summer release on June 9, 2028, according to Deadline. The publication notes the shift allows “Treasure Island” to take the production lead for the autumn slot while positioning “Helldivers” in a prime summer window. Produced by Hutch Parker, PlayStation Productions’ Asad Qizilbash, and Lin through Perfect Storm Entertainment, the movie centers on elite soldiers fighting alien creatures to protect the fictional planet of Super Earth.
Meanwhile, Takashi Yamazaki’s Bad Robot production “Grandgear” has shifted up from February 18, 2028, to January 14, 2028, capturing the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday weekend, as reported by TheWrap and Deadline. The film is directed by the “Godzilla Minus One” filmmaker and will open opposite Paramount’s “Longlegs” sequel, an untitled Universal project, and Amazon MGM Studios’ “Alone at Dawn.”
