An unofficial PvP multiplayer mod for The Last of Us Part II on PC has been cancelled after the project’s creator was asked by Sony Interactive Entertainment to halt its release, according to developer Speclizer. The modification project, which had been in development since January 2026, was scheduled to launch publicly in September 2026 before receiving a formal request from the company.

Sony Request Halts PC Multiplayer Mod Release

Modder Speclizer announced on September 13, 2026, via social media that an unofficial multiplayer project for the PC version of The Last of Us Part II would not move forward. According to the article, the announcement drew more than 540,000 views and 8,500 likes on X. Unfortunately I recently received a letter on behalf of Sony Interactive Entertainment requesting for the mod not to be released, Speclizer wrote on social media. Extremely sad that this never got to see the light of day but I hope you’ll continue to follow me onto the next project, this time something of my own. Speclizer had documented the system’s progress extensively over the summer, including a 27-minute gameplay video uploaded to YouTube on June 21, 2026, that showcased a multiplayer main menu and custom maps.

Features and Development Timeline of the Cancelled Mod

Throughout August 2026, the modder shared regular updates regarding the project’s feature set, which mirrored mechanics from Naughty Dog’s past multiplayer offerings. On August 19, 2026, a loadout system was fully integrated alongside a custom in-game backpack menu for purchasing weapons and ammunition. Subsequent development logs detailed the addition of a limited listen mode on August 20, 2026, which repurposed the single-player swim breath meter to function like the Factions multiplayer mode. On August 21, 2026, Speclizer introduced kill-based ammunition drops determined by the weapon used, followed by a gameplay clip on August 22, 2026, highlighting a new map, health kit pickups, and perks such as first aid training and agility.

Context Surrounding Naughty Dog and Multiplayer Development

The cancellation arrives amidst ongoing community interest in multiplayer experiences tied to the franchise. On December 14, 2023, Naughty Dog officially cancelled The Last of Us Online, its standalone multiplayer project, stating that supporting the game would have required all studio resources for years and harmed future single-player game development. Former Sony Interactive Entertainment executive Shuhei Yoshida later noted that he had played The Last of Us Online and thought it was great, while director Vinit Agarwal maintained that former colleagues still called it the best multiplayer game they had ever played. Naughty Dog subsequently brought The Last of Us Part II Remastered to PC on April 3, 2025, developed in partnership with Nixxes Software and Iron Galaxy Studios, featuring the single-player campaign alongside the No Return roguelike mode.
