Sony’s Major Gaming Push: From Helldivers to Bloodborne

Sony is expanding its strategy for adapting video game intellectual property into film and television, as detailed during its CinemaCon 2026 presentation on April 13, 2026. The studio is developing a slate of projects based on high-profile gaming titles, including Bloodborne, Helldivers, and The Legend of Zelda.

A primary highlight of the announcement is the development of an R-rated animated feature based on Bloodborne. The project is being produced by PlayStation Productions and Lyrical Animation, with content creator Seán McLoughlin, known as Jacksepticeye, serving as a producer. Lyrical Media, the parent company of Lyrical Animation, is co-financing the film alongside Sony Pictures.

Sanford Panitch, president of Sony Pictures Entertainment Motion Picture Group, stated that the Bloodborne adaptation will remain very true to the dark and violent essence of the original game. While the studio has not yet disclosed specific plot or casting details, the choice of an animated format is intended to bring the game’s gothic horror elements and atmospheric world to the screen.

Expanding the Gaming Slate

Beyond Bloodborne, Sony confirmed several other gaming-based cinematic projects. A film based on Helldivers is scheduled for release in 2027, with Justin Lin directing and Jason Momoa starring.

Sony is also working on an adaptation of The Legend of Zelda. This project is being produced by franchise creator Shigeru Miyamoto and directed by Wes Ball. The cast includes Benjamin Evan Ainsworth as Link and Bo Bragason as Princess Zelda.

Strategic Context and Production

The push into gaming adaptations is part of a broader effort by Sony Pictures to provide variety and scale to theatrical releases. This initiative complements other projects in the studio’s 2026 through 2028 slate, which includes Spider-Man: Brand New Day and Insidious: Out of the Further.

The Bloodborne project specifically leverages the existing fan base of the 2015 game developed by FromSoftware and published by Sony Interactive Entertainment. The original title is recognized for its high difficulty and layered lore, focusing on a traveler in a gothic city overrun by creatures.

By utilizing different mediums—such as animation for Bloodborne and traditional live-action for Helldivers—Sony is tailoring the production style to the specific tone of each gaming IP.
