sony is betting big on a headset-free, location-based entertainment (LBE) experience based on its hit franchise, The Last of Us. Unveiled at CES 2025 in Las Vegas, the concept transports players into the infected tunnels beneath Seattle, a city ravaged by a fungal pandemic.

Instead of relying on virtual reality headsets, Sony is utilizing a massive array of Crystal LED panels to create a truly immersive surroundings. “This is still in the proof-of-concept phase,” said Neil Druckmann, studio head of Naughty Dog and co-creator of the Last of Us. “but this new and incredible technology allows us to immerse all of your senses.”

The experience combines Sony’s cutting-edge display technology with engaging audio, haptics, scent, and atmospheric effects. Participants,armed with flashlights and tracked weapons,will navigate the dark and hazardous tunnels,encountering the terrifying infected that have become a hallmark of the franchise.

This unique approach, reminiscent of older CAVE (cave automatic virtual environment) setups, allows for a more accessible and streamlined experience. “Although undoubtedly expensive to create, a headset-less experience could allow for a much quicker user onboarding process,” said industry analyst [Insert name]. “More quickly moving the paying public through the experience is nice,but so is the overall reduction in downtime,such as equipment checks and sanitization,wich is a constant part of the VR arcade workflow.”

While Sony hasn’t confirmed a rollout plan, the company’s new Wonderverse destination in Chicago, which already features VR and non-VR experiences based on popular IPs like Jumanji and Ghostbusters, seems like a prime candidate.
