The trial of Senegalese singer Soryba Kouyaté has been postponed to May 5, 2026. This development, reported by Senenews, extends the legal proceedings for a case that has drawn significant public attention in Senegal.
Kouyaté faces serious criminal charges related to a series of high-value burglaries. According to reporting from Pulse.sn, the musician was arrested by the Division des investigations criminelles (Dic) for the theft of more than 500 million FCFA in gold and cash.
The investigation indicates that the crimes were committed between 2020 and 2024. The thefts specifically targeted multiple apartments located in the Mermoz and Sicap-Foire areas.
Kouyaté is accused of operating with an accomplice, Abdoulaye Sow, who is 35 years old and also a singer. Pulse.sn describes the pair as artistes-cambrioleurs
(artist-burglars).
The legal charges brought against the duo include the following:
- Association of criminals
- Theft committed in a group with breaking and entering
- Usage of means of transport to facilitate the crimes
Law enforcement identified the suspects by analyzing a series of police complaints. These complaints were filed on August 11, 2022, May 9, 2023, and May 13, 2024.
The victims identified in the proceedings are Alassane Diouf, El Hadji Cheikh Serge Ndao, and Saye Diokhané. These individuals reported thefts totaling 5 million, 6 million, and 500 million FCFA, respectively.
Prior to the current trial proceedings at the Dakar court, Kouyaté spent nearly two years in preventive detention. According to Senego, he was placed under a warrant of committal following his arrest.
During his period of detention, his case was transmitted to an investigating judge. This process was intended to conduct the necessary investigations to clarify the details of the burglaries and the associated evidence.
The musician will now be required to explain these accusations and respond to the charges before the court in Dakar on May 5, 2026.
