Soulja Boy Disputes Claim He Wasn’t First Streamer Nominated for a Grammy
The debate over who can claim the title of “first streamer nominated for a Grammy” has ignited a social media exchange between rapper Soulja Boy and artist PlaqueBoyMax. Soulja Boy asserted that he received a Grammy nomination in 2008, predating PlaqueBoyMax’s recent nomination at the 2026 Grammy Awards.
The controversy began after PlaqueBoyMax celebrated his nomination for Best Dance/Electronic Recording for Fred again.. And Skepta’s “Victory Lap,” posting online that he was the “FIRST STREAMER EVER NOMINATED FOR A GRAMMYYY.” Soulja Boy quickly responded on X, stating, “Cap 🧢 I did that in 2008.”
Soulja Boy’s 2008 nomination was for Best Rap Song for his hit single, “Crank That (Soulja Boy).” While he did not win—Kanye West’s “Good Life” took home the award—the nomination marked a significant moment in his career and in the evolution of viral music culture.
The discussion also touched on the evolving definition of “streamer.” While the term wasn’t commonly used in 2008, sources note that Soulja Boy was an early adopter of livestreaming platforms like justin.tv in 2007 and performed on YouTube Live in 2008. He currently streams on platforms such as Twitch and Kick, having recently joined Kick’s Partner Program.
PlaqueBoyMax addressed Soulja Boy’s comments while speaking with Variety on the red carpet, acknowledging Soulja Boy’s claim. “Well, actually, I just went on Twitter and seen Soulja Boy did it. I didn’t know that,” he said. “Soulja Boy did everything first, like, bro, let me have some, n**ga.”
Despite not winning the Grammy, PlaqueBoyMax maintained a positive outlook, stating, “Chat we lost. No rigged comments you feel me. N***as won fair and square it happens.” He also expressed gratitude for the nomination, calling it a “blessing” and “an honor.”
The exchange highlights the impact early digital creators like Soulja Boy had on shaping the modern music streaming landscape. As one observer noted online, “If you ever think you’re the first to do something, chances are Soulja Boy already did it years ago.”
The 2026 Grammy Awards saw Tame Impala win the Best Dance/Electronic Recording category for their track “End of Summer.”
