Grant Tiers and Festival Capacity Limits

The funding program, administered by Sound NSW within the Department of Creative Industries, Tourism, Hospitality and Sport, provides financial backing split across two distinct capacity tiers. Festival organizers can receive up to $100,000 for events with a capacity of up to 12,000 attendees. For larger events, festivals with a capacity exceeding 12,000 are eligible to apply for up to $250,000 in funding. Grants support the direct costs associated with programming and presenting contemporary music festivals across New South Wales. Eligible expenses include artist fees, staff and industry professional salaries, production costs, marketing, promotional outlays, travel, accommodation, and administrative overhead.

Strict Musician Fee Requirements and Eligibility Rules

Applicants must build their proposed budgets around mandatory wage standards set by the NSW Government. All musicians performing at events backed by the program must receive a minimum performance fee of $250 plus superannuation. Budgets submitted without compliance for this musician fee requirement will not meet funding guidelines. To qualify for assistance, applicants must hold an active Australian Business Number, maintain a bank account under the exact name of that ABN, and operate primarily out of New South Wales. Eligible festivals must feature new and original contemporary music, predominantly showcase local artists alongside performers from NSW Government priority groups, and collaborate with local venues and community organizations. Sound NSW defines a qualifying music festival as an advertised event marketed under a single banner with music as its core focus, running for a collective duration of at least five hours across single or consecutive days.

Allocation Targets for Western Sydney and Regional Areas

Sound NSW has earmarked 50 percent of the total program budget specifically for activities taking place in Western Sydney and regional New South Wales. The funding strategy aims to strengthen community participation, expand all-ages programming, and amplify priority communities to build a diverse contemporary music sector. The funding program excludes experimental music, sound art, contemporary classical, opera, choral works, ensembles, and music theatre. Applicants delivering events in those artforms are directed instead to Create NSW programs. Successful applicants are restricted to one submission per financial year for Local Audience Development Grants and can receive a maximum of two Sound NSW competitive grants in a single financial year.

Festival Delivery Timeline and Deadlines

The application window remains open until 9 November 2026 at 2:00 pm. Approved projects must adhere to strict schedule requirements, meaning supported activities cannot start before 1 February 2027 and must be fully completed by 28 February 2028.
