South Africa Condemns Deadly Attacks in Syria, Calls for Peaceful Resolution
Pretoria, South Africa – The South African government has expressed deep concern over the recent offensive in Aleppo and Idlib, Syria, wich has resulted in civilian casualties, widespread destruction, and displacement.
The attacks,carried out by Tahrir Al-Sham (HTS),a group designated as a terrorist organization by the UN Security Council,and a coalition of foreign mercenaries,have exacerbated the already dire humanitarian situation in the region.
“ther can be no military solution to this conflict,” a statement from the Department of International Relations and Cooperation emphasized. “It must be resolved peacefully, through a Syrian-owned and Syrian-led inclusive dialog.”
south Africa reaffirmed its commitment to supporting the efforts of the UN Secretary-General’s Special Envoy for Syria in facilitating a peaceful resolution to the conflict, in line with UN Security Council Resolution 2254 (2015).
the South African government also expressed solidarity with the Syrian peopel, who have endured immense suffering since the conflict erupted in 2011.
“We call on all parties to the conflict to respect international humanitarian law and protect civilians, especially women and children,” the statement added. “The reported use of heavy artillery in populated areas continues to place innocent lives in danger.”
