South Africa’s Bid: A Continental First
South Africa has officially confirmed its intention to bid for the 2036 Olympic and Paralympic Games, marking a significant step towards possibly bringing the event to the African continent for the first time. The South African government confirmed ongoing talks with the International Olympic Committee (IOC) regarding a potential bid, according to a statement released on November 14, 2023. This follows initial discussions that began earlier in the year.
The country has a strong sporting history, having hosted soccer’s FIFA World cup in 2010 FIFA. It is also scheduled to co-host the Cricket World Cup in 2027, representing its second time hosting the tournament, and has previously hosted the Rugby World Cup. Moreover, South Africa is actively pursuing a Formula One Grand Prix from 2027, which would be the first race for the series in Africa Formula 1.
Global Competition for the 2036 Games
South Africa joins a growing list of nations vying to host the 2036 Olympics. Senegal’s Dakar was previously considered, but its bid faced challenges. Currently, India’s Ahmedabad, Qatar’s Doha, Turkey’s Istanbul, and Chile’s santiago have all expressed interest and previously confirmed their intention to bid according to the IOC.
Looking further ahead, London mayor Sadiq Khan has voiced support for a potential bid for the 2040 Games. Munich, Germany, is also considering bids for the 2036, 2040, or 2044 Games, with residents recently voting in favor of submitting a proposal as reported by Inside the Games.
South Africa’s Sporting Infrastructure and Ambitions
South Africa’s existing sporting infrastructure, developed for previous major events, provides a foundation for a successful Olympic bid. The 2010 FIFA World Cup resulted in significant upgrades to stadiums and transportation networks. however, substantial investment would still be required to meet the IOC’s requirements for hosting the Olympic Games.
The country’s bid is expected to emphasize its commitment to sustainability, inclusivity, and leveraging the Games to promote social and economic progress. A successful bid could have a transformative impact on South Africa, boosting tourism, creating jobs, and inspiring a new generation of athletes.
