A South African court sentenced Racquel “Kelly” Smith to life in prison Thursday for her role in the human trafficking of her 6-year-old daughter, Joshlin Smith. The child disappeared in Febuary of last year from saldanha Bay, a fishing community north of Cape Town, triggering an extensive search.
Judge Nathan Erasmus handed down the sentance, also jailing Smith’s boyfriend and a friend for human trafficking and kidnapping. All three will be added to the child protection register. In addition to the life sentence, they received a concurrent 10-year sentence for kidnapping.
Erasmus stated that Smith, a mother of two, displayed no remorse for joshlin’s disappearance, adding that drug use was no excuse for her actions. The courtroom, which included the girl’s grandmother, erupted in applause upon hearing the verdict.

Prosecutors alleged that Joshlin was sold to a traditional healer for approximately $1,121, motivated by the child’s fair complexion and striking green eyes. A pastor testified that Smith had discussed the planned sale in 2023.
Child kidnapping is reportedly on the rise in South Africa, a nation grappling with high crime rates.
What’s next
The examination into the traditional healer and any other individuals involved in the trafficking of Joshlin Smith is ongoing. Authorities are expected to release further details as the case progresses.
