What Happened? The Spread of Measles in South Carolina

The outbreak began with a confirmed case in Richland County in late February. Subsequent investigations revealed further cases linked to a single source, indicating community spread. DHEC has not publicly identified the initial source, citing privacy concerns, but emphasizes the importance of vaccination as the primary preventative measure. The cases involve individuals of varying ages, including some who were unvaccinated or had not received the recommended two doses of the MMR (Measles, Mumps, and Rubella) vaccine.

quarantine measures have been implemented for individuals exposed to the virus, restricting their movement to prevent further transmission. DHEC is actively contact tracing to identify and notify anyone who may have been exposed. The agency is also working with healthcare providers and schools to raise awareness and promote vaccination.

Measles: A Highly Contagious Disease

Measles is a highly contagious viral infection that can spread through the air when an infected person coughs or sneezes. Symptoms typically begin with a fever, cough, runny nose, and red, watery eyes, followed by a rash that spreads over the body. Complications can include pneumonia, encephalitis (brain swelling),and even death.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reports that measles is preventable with the MMR vaccine, which is 97% effective in preventing the disease after two doses. Though, vaccine hesitancy and declining vaccination rates have contributed to a resurgence of measles cases in recent years, both nationally and globally.

Impact and Response in South Carolina

The south Carolina outbreak is particularly concerning given the state’s vaccination rates. According to DHEC data from the 2022-2023 school year, MMR vaccination coverage among kindergarteners was 92.8%, slightly below the CDC’s target of 95% for herd immunity. This leaves a vulnerable population susceptible to infection.

DHEC is urging all South Carolinians to review their vaccination records and get vaccinated if they are not fully protected.Free or low-cost vaccinations are available through various healthcare providers and local health departments. The agency is also emphasizing the importance of staying home if you are feeling sick and contacting your healthcare provider before seeking medical care.
