UConn head coach Geno Auriemma acknowledged that South Carolina was the better coached team following a matchup between the two programs in the Final Four in Phoenix.

Reflecting on the conclusion of the game, Auriemma stated that The game isn’t about a coach. It’s about the players on the court. South Carolina proved to be the better coached team.

The Path to the Final Four

South Carolina’s appearance in the Final Four followed a victory over the No. 3 TCU Horned Frogs on March 30, 2026. In that Elite Eight matchup played in Sacramento, the top-seeded Gamecocks defeated TCU with a final score of 78-65.

The win secured South Carolina’s sixth consecutive trip to the Final Four. During the game against TCU, the Gamecocks established an early lead and maintained control throughout the contest. Their defensive effort held TCU to 65 points, a figure noted as being well below the Horned Frogs’ season average.

Standout performances in the victory over TCU came from junior guard Zia Cooke and senior forward Aliyah Boston, who is regarded as one of the top players in the country.

Program Leadership and Player Development

The continued success of the South Carolina program is led by head coach Dawn Staley. Staley has guided the Gamecocks to a national championship in 2017 and has established the program as one of the premier women’s basketball teams in the United States through multiple Final Four appearances.

Beyond the veteran leadership of Boston and Cooke, Staley has focused on the development of younger talent. In discussing the contributions of guard Agot, Staley noted that the player has been playing consistently and has shown growth in focus and preparation.

Staley described Agot as probably the most talented guard that we have on our roster, like, just both sides of the ball, while adding that the player continues to gain the necessary playing experience to fully realize her potential.

Fan Culture and Attendance

The dominance of the South Carolina Gamecocks has been mirrored by significant growth in their fan base. The program has led women’s basketball in attendance for 12 consecutive seasons.

Staley has characterized the support from the fans as more than a movement, describing it instead as a lifestyle for those who budget their time and finances to attend games and support the team on the road. Staley attributed the growth of this culture to word-of-mouth support rather than marketing ploys.
