Cheonan City and Asan City’s All-Out Efforts to Attract Public Institutions

Cheonan City and Asan City in South Chungcheong Province are making aggressive moves to attract public institutions, including the National Dental Research Institute and the 2nd Central Police Academy.

Cheonan City’s Bid for the National Dental Research Institute

Cheonan City has been actively pursuing the establishment of the National Dental Research Institute, emphasizing its geographical advantage as the center of the country and a transportation hub, as well as its technological concentration of dental medical personnel.

According to the 2022 ‘National Dental Research Institute Attraction Feasibility Study Report for Cheonan City’, 42.7% of dentists nationwide are located in the Cheonan area, and dental care benefit costs account for 55.9% of the nation. In addition, the number of medical device companies is 52.7%, the highest in the nation, showing that it has the largest medical workforce, technology, and economic scale.

Cheonan City is also making practical preparations, such as purchasing a 5,162㎡ site in the convergence R&D district near Cheonan Asan Station in February of last year.

Asan City’s Bid for the 2nd Central Police Academy

Asan City has expressed its ambitious goal to become a true ‘police-specialized city’ by continuing the momentum and attracting the ‘2nd National Police Academy’.

Asan City has submitted a challenge to this competition, proposing the Police Town area, where the Police Human Resources Development Institute, Police University, Investigation Training Institute, and Police Hospital (planned) are located, as a candidate site.

In particular, the city is highlighting its strengths in that it has an excellent metropolitan transportation network, including highways, high-speed railways (KTX, SRT), metropolitan subways, and the GTX-C, which is currently under review for extension, as well as a police town with a police university, police human resources development center, investigative research center, and police hospital (planned).

Joint Response to the Establishment of the Immigration Office

Cheonan City and Asan City are jointly responding to the Ministry of Justice’s promotion of the ‘Immigration Office’. As of November 2022, the number of foreigners in South Chungcheong Province is approximately 136,000, ranking 4th nationwide and 1st among non-metropolitan areas, and Cheonan and Asan are home to approximately 70,000 foreigners, so there is sufficient justification for attracting the office.

The proposed site is also optimal for transportation accessibility, as it is around the KTX Cheonan-Asan Station. From December of last year to the end of January of this year, the two cities have been collaborating to attract the immigration office, such as by starting to write a joint signature book.
