South Dakota State Wrestling Dominates at Warren Williamson Daktronics Invitational

South Dakota State Wrestling Team Competes at Warren Williamson Daktronics Invitational

The South Dakota State wrestling team hosted the Warren Williamson Daktronics Invitational this past weekend.

Outstanding Performances:

  • Drake Rhodes: Dominated the 165-pound weight class with three wins, each earning bonus points.
  • Brady Roark: In the 125-pound class, he faced the No. 1 wrestler, Richard Figueroa. Roark scored a takedown before Figueroa’s injury default. He also won against #31 Antonio Lorenzo, achieving a 1-0 decision.
  • Cale Seaton: The freshman went 3-0 in his matches, securing three decision victories.
  • Derrick Cardinal: Competing at 133 pounds, he went undefeated with a tech fall and two major decisions.
  • Avery Allen: After suffering a loss, he rebounded with a major decision win over NDSU’s Michael Olson.

More Thrilling Matches:

  • Marcus Espinoza-Owens: Although he previously competed at 174 pounds, he wrestled at 165 this time and achieved a 4-0 record with impressive wins, including two major decisions.
  • Bennett Berge: Competing at 184 pounds, he won all three of his matches, including a notable victory over Oklahoma’s #26 DJ Parker.

Strong Showings at 197 Pounds:

  • Zach Glazier and Thomas Dineen: Both wrestlers achieved perfect records. Glazier secured three tech falls, while Dineen scored a pin and two major decisions, including a victory over #24 Bradley Hill.

Looking Ahead:
The next competition for the Jackrabbits is a dual match against Northern Iowa on November 24 in Cedar Falls, Iowa. Northern Iowa is ranked 14th, just below SDSU in the NWCA Coaches Poll. Bennett Berge faces a challenging opponent, Parker Keckeisen, who is ranked No. 2 in the nation but recently lost a match.
