MUAN, South Korea – A Jeju Air flight carrying 175 passengers and six crew members crashed while landing at Muan International Airport in southwest South Korea on Sunday morning, leaving at least 120 people dead. The Boeing 737-800,en route from Bangkok, veered off the runway, slammed into a barrier, and burst into flames. Two crew members were the only confirmed survivors, pulled from the wreckage by first responders.

“There is little chance of survival for any remaining passengers,” a fire department spokesperson said later Sunday. “Passengers were ejected from the aircraft upon impact, leaving minimal hope.”

The plane was nearly entirely destroyed, making the identification of victims a tough and lengthy process. Images from the scene showed thick smoke and flames engulfing parts of the aircraft, which was split in two.

A Nation in Mourning

Acting President choi Sung-mok, who assumed office on Friday, ordered a full-scale rescue effort and visited the crash site, pledging that the government would deploy all available resources.

“Words cannot express the sorrow felt by the families affected by this tragedy,” Choi said.

thai Prime Minister Paetongtam Shinawatra offered condolences to the families of the victims and said her government would provide assistance.

Inquiry Underway

The cause of the crash remains under investigation.Initial reports suggested a possible malfunction with the aircraft’s landing gear after a bird strike. Though, weather conditions are also being considered as a potential contributing factor. Boeing, the aircraft manufacturer, released a statement expressing condolences to those affected and confirming they are in contact with Jeju Air.

Jeju Air stated they would cooperate fully with authorities in the investigation to determine the cause of the accident.

“We deeply regret this tragic incident,” said Kim E-bae, CEO of Jeju Air. “Our priority now is to provide support to the families of those who have lost loved ones.”
