SEOUL, South Korea — ‍A motorcycle rider died after falling into a sinkhole in Seoul, officials ⁣said. The victim was found after an overnight search.

The sinkhole,⁢ measuring approximately 20 meters wide and 20 meters deep, ⁢opened suddenly at an intersection in⁣ the Myeongil-dong⁤ area of eastern Seoul ‍on Monday afternoon, according to authorities. the sinkhole swallowed the motorcycle and‍ also resulted in minor injuries to a woman in ⁣a nearby vehicle.

The cause of‍ the sinkhole is under examination.Seoul Mayor Oh Se-Hoon visited the site‍ Monday night, urging authorities to determine the cause and prevent similar incidents.

Understanding⁢ Sinkholes

Originally, a sinkhole was defined as a depression or natural surface decrease⁣ in karst or chalky‍ terrain.

Over time, the definition has ⁣broadened. Now, any collapse of the ground surface, whether in a karst area, a ⁤natural event, or due to⁤ human actions, can be considered a sinkhole.

Sinkholes frequently enough occur‍ in karst or chalk hills due to the dissolution of⁢ limestone by natural processes or acid ⁢rain.‍ This dissolution is⁢ a slow process, occurring at a rate of millimeters over thousands of years.

Some experts suggest that sinkholes‍ form naturally over extended periods, but events like earthquakes can accelerate the process.

Besides karst regions, sinkholes can also result from soil subsidence due to gravity,⁢ erosion of sedimentary layers, or changes in soil structure. This‍ last type of sinkhole ⁤is particularly risky because it can occur rapidly and unexpectedly.

sinkholes appearing on roads, as in the Seoul⁢ incident, or near ‍residential areas pose a⁣ notable⁢ risk, often requiring immediate evacuation ⁤of residents.
