South Korea’s suffocating heatwave began to break on August 11, 2026, as authorities lifted heatwave and tropical night warnings across the vast majority of the peninsula. The relief follows a period of “steamer-like” heat that dominated national weather patterns, though the reprieve brings a new set of atmospheric threats to the east.

A Break in the Summer Stagnation

The Korea Meteorological Administration (KMA) has deactivated heatwave alerts in nearly all regions. According to YTN, only select areas in Gyeonggi Province remain under warning. It is a significant shift.

MBC News reports that while some daytime heat will persist, residents can now expect cooler mornings. The lifting of tropical night warnings signals an end to the oppressive overnight temperatures that had previously gripped the country.

Heavy Rainfall Forecast for the East Coast

As temperatures drop, the focus shifts to precipitation. The KMA forecasts rain totaling up to 60mm for the eastern coasts of Gangwon and Gyeongsangbuk-do provinces starting Wednesday.

Yonhap News and Yonhap News TV report that this rainfall will concentrate specifically on the east coast and the mountainous regions of Gangwon and Gyeongsangbuk-do. The transition suggests a rapid change in moisture flow and atmospheric pressure.

Regional Shifts in Weather Patterns

While much of the country enjoys a decline in temperature, the eastern coastal regions must now prepare for significant rainfall. The peak of the summer heat has passed, replaced by a volatile weather front moving through the eastern provinces.
