South Korea Wins Silver in Women’s Foil Fencing at Asian Games

The South Korean women’s fencing foil team secured a silver medal at the 2026 Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games after falling 29-28 to Japan in the final on Sept. 26, 2026, at the Aichi Sky Expo Hall in Tokoname, Aichi Prefecture, Japan. The final minute of the match slipped away as Japan erased a late deficit to claim the gold medal.

Entering the final round with a 26-22 lead after eight rounds, South Korea positioned its ace, Park Ji-hee, as the anchor. Japan countered with Ueno Yuka, who had previously defeated Park in the individual final on Sept. 23, 2026. Ueno narrowed the gap to 27-27 before overtaking the score in the final minute. Despite Park scoring within the final 17 seconds to bring the deficit to 28-29, the clock ran out before the team could complete a comeback.

Facing World-Class Opponents

The final pitted South Korea against a Japanese squad featuring three athletes ranked inside the global top 10 in women’s foil. Ueno holds a world individual ranking of third, Kikuchi Komaki sits at sixth, and Azuma Sera stands at eighth.

By comparison, South Korea’s lineup faced a statistical deficit in individual rankings. Ace Park Ji-hee entered ranked 23rd, while teammates Mo Byeol-i and Shim So-eun ranked 24th and 55th, respectively. Despite the ranking disparity, the South Korean team kept the pressure on their opponents through the first eight rounds, coming within reach of an upset before the late-match shift.

Tears and Future Targets for a Young Roster

Following the narrow defeat, Park expressed regret over the outcome of the final round, noting that she struggled during her stint on the strip. At 25 years old, Park serves as the eldest member of a squad undergoing generational transition, marking her first appearance at the Asian Games.
