Gen Gabriel Doup Lam and Puot Kang Chol, both senior members of the Sudan People’s Liberation Movement in Opposition (SPLM-IO) and allies of Vice-President riek Machar, were taken into custody. These actions have raised concerns about the stability of the peace agreement between Machar and President Salva Kiir.
The South Sudan government has not yet provided reasons for the arrests. Col Lam Gabriel Paul, military spokesperson for SPLM-IO, told the BBC that the government had given no reasons for the arrests.
Background of the Conflict
south Sudan, the world’s newest nation since seceding from Sudan in 2011, plunged into civil war in 2013 after a fallout between Machar and Kiir. The conflict resulted in an estimated 400,000 deaths and displaced 2.5 million people.
A peace deal was eventually signed in 2018,but its implementation has been challenging.Despite the current tensions, government spokesperson Michael Makuei told reporters in Juba on Wednesday that President Kiir has assured that South Sudan woudl not return to war.
Gen Lam, who oversees the opposition party’s military wing yet to be integrated into the army, was arrested on Tuesday. Puot Kang Chol was detained by security forces “in the middle of the night.”
Prior to the arrests, troops from the South sudanese army surrounded Machar’s house in Juba before withdrawing. reports indicate that other senior military officials aligned with Machar have been placed under house arrest.

Reactions and Concerns
The recent arrests have placed the peace deal in a precarious position.Machar’s spokesperson, Pal Mai Deng, told the AFP news agency that Gen Lam’s arrest “violates” the peace act.
“This act puts the entire agreement at risk,”

Deng has called for international intervention to address the escalating situation.
These events follow reports of the White Army militia seizing a strategic town in Upper Nile state near the Ethiopian border after clashes with government forces. The White Army had previously fought alongside Machar during the civil war.
Accusations have surfaced from within the army, loyal to Kiir, alleging that Machar’s allies are supporting the rebels. The UN and African Union have cautioned that the violence could spread.
Ter manyang, head of the Center for Peace and Advocacy in Juba, warned that the fighting could jeopardize the peace deal.
“The country is likely to slide to war unless the situation is managed by the top leadership of the country,”
