Ogan Ilir, South Sumatra – The specter of forest and land fires (karhutla) looms large over south Sumatra, with Ogan Ilir Regency now officially designated as a “red zone” due to a concerning surge in fire incidents.As of July 26, 2025, the region has grappled with 98 reported karhutla events across 11 of its 17 regencies and cities, painting a stark picture of the ongoing environmental challenge.
Ogan Ilir, the Red Zone for Forest and Land Fires
The data, compiled from hotspot monitoring, reveals a troubling trend. Nearly 100 active fire points have been identified, underscoring the severity of the situation. Sudirman, a representative from the relevant authorities, confirmed that these fires have impacted a significant portion of the province.”From January 1 to July 26, 2025, the incidents of karhutla have reached 98 times in various regions of South Sumatra,” he stated, highlighting the widespread nature of the problem.
Ogan ilir Leads the Blaze
Within this alarming provincial tally, Ogan Ilir regency stands out with the highest number of karhutla incidents, recording a staggering 56 cases. This grim statistic has led to its classification as a red zone, a designation that signals an urgent need for intervention and heightened vigilance. Delving deeper into the affected areas, the North Indralaya District within Ogan Ilir has emerged as the epicenter, reporting the highest number of incidents at 28.
Yellow Zones and Scattered Incidents
While Ogan Ilir bears the brunt of the fires, other regencies are also grappling with the threat, albeit to a lesser extent.These areas have been categorized as “yellow zones.” Ogan Komering Ilir (OKI) Regency and Musi Banyuasin (Muba) Regency have each recorded 9 incidents. Following closely,Muara Enim Regency has reported 7 incidents,and Banyuasin Regency has documented 6.Further afield, Penukal Abab Lematang Ilir Regency (PALI) has experienced 5 forest and land fire incidents. Prabumulih City has recorded 2 incidents, while Musi Rawas Regency, Empat Lawang, Lahat, and Palembang City have each reported one karhutla incident.
Awaiting Complete Data
Despite the clear indication of widespread fires, Sudirman noted that precise figures on the extent of burned land and affected concessions are still being compiled. “For now, we are still waiting for data from the Forest Fire Control Agency of the Ministry of Forestry,” he explained, emphasizing the ongoing efforts to gather a complete picture of the damage.
This situation underscores the critical importance of continued monitoring and proactive measures to combat forest and land fires, protecting both the environment and the communities within South Sumatra.
