Southern California wilderness features elevations reaching 282 feet below sea level at Badwater Basin alongside massive formations towering 140 feet high at the Trona Pinnacles.

Joshua Tree Granite Formations and Desert Hiking Trails

Arch Rock in Joshua Tree National Park consists of a natural granite formation near White Tank Campground that took shape underground as water wore away corners before erosion removed the overlying soil. Visitors can complete a 1.4-mile round-trip hike from the Twin Tanks parking area, following trail signs that detail the geological history of the boulders. Cooler months provide the optimal climate for exploring this exposed desert route.

Palms and Volcanic Cinders Across the Mojave

Palm Canyon contains thousands of California fan palms stretching along a 15-mile creek within land belonging to the Agua Caliente Band of Cahuilla Indians. Visitors can access the shaded oasis from a Trading Post that supplies hiking maps for the surrounding desert. Meanwhile, Amboy Crater features a 250-foot-high cinder cone and a broad lava field inside Mojave Trails National Monument alongside historic Route 66. Hikers can cross the lava field on a 3-to-4-mile round-trip route to reach the rim during cooler fall or winter weather.

Coastal Sandstone Caves and Rare Tree Preserves

Seven sea caves punctuate the sandstone cliffs east of La Jolla Cove, carved by ocean waves into rock dating back approximately 75 million years. North of San Diego, Torrey Pines State Natural Reserve protects rare Torrey pines growing on bluffs above the Pacific Ocean.

Basin Salt Flats and Singing Dunes

Badwater Basin in Death Valley National Park forms North America’s lowest point at 282 feet below sea level, where evaporating water leaves behind a crust of dissolved minerals. A wooden boardwalk passes the saltwater pool near Badwater Road, while the rugged Panamint Range frames the western horizon. In the Mojave National Preserve, Kelso Dunes reach heights exceeding 600 feet from sand carried by wind from dried lakebeds. Walking a 3-mile round-trip route to the main dune allows visitors to experience the rare acoustic phenomenon known as singing dunes.

State Park Wind Caves and Island Sea Vaults

Reaching the trailhead requires navigating a 4-mile drive along Fish Creek Wash from Split Mountain Road where vehicle choice depends on post-rain road conditions. Off the coast, Painted Cave on Santa Cruz Island extends 1,227 feet into the northwest shore, holding the title of California’s largest sea cave. Seasonal boat excursions offer access to the entrance, though rough seas can restrict approach.

Ancient Tufa Spires in Searles Dry Lake

Trona Pinnacles contains more than 500 mineral towers made of porous tufa that reach up to 140 feet high within the Searles Dry Lake basin. These formations were deposited underwater between 10,000 and 100,000 years ago when the site formed part of an ancient chain of lakes stretching from Mono Lake to Death Valley. The area received National Natural Landmark status in 1968, and sunrise or sunset hours offer optimal lighting for landscape photography among the spires.
