Fathers of Southport Attack Victims Run London Marathon
in a moving tribute, the fathers of two girls who died in the southport attack completed the London Marathon. Sergio Aguiar and David Stancombe participated in the race to raise funds for projects created in memory of their daughters, Alice Aguiar, 9, and Elsie Dot Stancombe, 7, who, along with 6-year-old Bebe king, were killed last July at a Taylor Swift-themed dance workshop.
The fathers received a boost from Prime Minister Keir Starmer on race day. Aguiar noted the support was appreciated. Stancombe expressed amazement at the widespread awareness and support, saying he was overwhelmed by the number of messages received.
Aguiar completed the 26.2-mile race in 4 hours and 5 minutes, while Stancombe finished in 4 hours and 28 minutes. Lauren and Ben King, bebe’s parents, were also present in London, cheering Aguiar and Stancombe from the sidelines.
In a video message to the families, Starmer said, “This is an amazing way to honor the memory of your precious daughters, and the entire nation is in awe of your courage and your resilience.”
stancombe is raising money for Elsie’s Story, a charitable trust providing grants to young people and supporting the Southport community. Elsie’s mother, Jenni Stancombe, mentioned that the Prince and Princess of Wales donated to Elsie’s Story and sent a “special message” to the family before the race.
Jinnie Payne, headteacher at Churchtown primary School, where Alice and Bebe were students, ran alongside Aguiar. She noted that Prince William and Catherine also contributed to the Churchtown Playground fund, which will create a new playground with a performance stage and library. Payne said the school was deeply touched by the royal support.
