Passengers Thrown from Seats as Jet Experiences Dramatic Descent
A Southwest Airlines flight bound for Las vegas experienced a terrifying plunge shortly after departing from Hollywood Burbank Airport on Friday, an incident triggered by an onboard alert regarding a nearby aircraft. The dramatic descent, which saw some passengers ejected from their seats, resulted in injuries to two flight attendants and has prompted an examination by the Federal aviation Governance (FAA).
The flight, identified as Southwest 1496, was en route to Las Vegas when it suddenly jolted and appeared to be falling, according to passenger Stef Zamorano. “She was pretty much verbalising how we all felt, saying, ‘I want to get off this plane. I want to be on the ground,'” Zamorano recounted to The Associated Press, describing the panic onboard. She witnessed a woman not wearing her seatbelt being thrown upwards and out of her seat during the alarming drop.
Flight tracking data from FlightAware indicates the aircraft lost approximately 300 feet (91.44 meters) in just 36 seconds. The FAA confirmed the flight was responding to an onboard alert concerning another aircraft in its vicinity.
Pilot Actions and Passenger Accounts
Southwest Airlines stated that the crew reacted to two alerts that necessitated the pilot to execute a climb followed by a descent. American comedian Jimmy Dore, a passenger on the flight, shared his experience on X, reporting that the pilot had announced a “collision warning went off & he needed to avoid plane coming at us.”
The flight tracking data revealed that the Southwest jet was in the same airspace near Burbank as a Hawker Hunter Mk 58, a British fighter jet, shortly after noon local time. Records indicate the Hawker hunter is owned by Hawker hunter Aviation, a British defense contracting company. The company had not promptly responded to requests for comment at the time of reporting.
Airport Records and Flight Continuation
Interestingly,Mike Christensen,an airport spokesman for Hollywood burbank, stated that neither the control tower nor the operations department, responsible for tracking departing and arriving aircraft, had any record of the Southwest flight plunging within their airspace.
despite the alarming incident, Southwest confirmed that the flight continued its journey to Las Vegas, where it “landed uneventfully.” The airline is cooperating with the FAA to thoroughly investigate the circumstances surrounding the event.
Aviation safety Concerns
This close call adds to a growing list of aviation safety concerns, especially in the wake of a fatal mid-air collision over Washington D.C. in January that claimed 67 lives. Incidents like these underscore the critical importance of robust air traffic control systems, pilot training, and advanced collision avoidance technologies in ensuring the safety of air travel. As investigations continue, the aviation industry will be closely watching for any insights that could further enhance safety protocols and prevent future occurrences. The future of aviation safety hinges on continuous vigilance, technological advancement, and a commitment to learning from every incident, ensuring that passenger confidence remains paramount in the skies.
