Amazon MGM Studios has announced that the long-awaited sequel to the 1987 sci-fi spoof Spaceballs is scheduled for wide theatrical release on April 23, 2027. The film is timed to coincide with the 40th anniversary of the original cult classic.

The production marks a significant return to acting for Rick Moranis, who will reprise his role as Lord Dark Helmet. According to reporting from Variety and Wikipedia, this project represents Moranis’ first live-action film role in 30 years.

Joining Moranis is a substantial portion of the original cast. Bill Pullman returns as Lone Starr, Daphne Zuniga reprises her role as Princess Vespa—now Queen Vespa—and George Wyner returns as Colonel Sandurz. Mel Brooks, who directed the original film, returns as the Yoga-esque being Yogurt and President Skroob.

New Cast and Creative Team

The sequel introduces several new cast members, including Josh Gad, Keke Palmer, and Anthony Carrigan. Palmer will appear as a character named Destiny. Lewis Pullman, the son of Bill Pullman, joins the cast as Starburst, the son of Lone Starr, and Vespa.

Josh Greenbaum is directing the film. The screenplay was written by Josh Gad, Benji Samit, and Dan Hernandez. The production is being handled by Imagine Entertainment, with producers Brian Grazer, Ron Howard, and Jeb Brody, alongside Gad, Brooks, Greenbaum, and Kevin Salter.

Production History and Development

The path to a sequel spanned over a decade of intermittent discussions. In a 2013 interview, Rick Moranis stated that he and Mel Brooks had discussed a potential follow-up, with Moranis suggesting the title Spaceballs III: The Search for Spaceballs II. However, the project did not move forward at that time because the parties were unable to structure a viable deal.

In February 2015, Mel Brooks expressed a desire to produce a sequel following the release of another Star Wars film and noted his hope that Moranis would return to the role of Lord Dark Helmet.

Josh Gad later teased the existence of the sequel in an Instagram post during the summer of 2024, preceding the official release date announcement.

Legacy of the Original Film

The original Spaceballs was released by MGM in 1987, ten years after the debut of George Lucas’ Star Wars. The film served as a parody of the space opera genre and other popular media, earning $38.1 million at the box office before achieving cult status.

The upcoming sequel is expected to maintain the same satirical approach, primarily parodying Star Wars and other contemporary popular media. While the release date and cast have been confirmed, Amazon MGM Studios has not yet shared official plot details or a final official title for the film.
