Mel Brooks has officially revealed the title and release date for the sequel to his 1987 space opera parody, Spaceballs. During a video presentation shown on April 15, 2026, at CinemaCon, Brooks announced that the film is titled Spaceballs: The New One
.
The sequel is scheduled for a theatrical-only release on April 23, 2027. The project is being moved forward by Amazon MGM Studios, providing the film with a full theatrical rollout.
The Title Reveal
In the CinemaCon video, Brooks addressed the long-standing expectation regarding the film’s name. For years, fans had referenced a potential title mentioned in the original film: Spaceballs 2: The Search for More Money
.
Brooks joked that Spaceballs 2: The Search for More Money is not going to be the title of this movie
, explaining that he had finally found the money in his basement. He then introduced the actual title, stating, Well, we did it, and the title is… Spaceballs: The New One. It’s just like the old one, but it’s newer
.
Returning and New Cast Members
The production reunites several members of the original 1987 cast in their primary roles. Rick Moranis returns as Lord Dark Helmet, Bill Pullman reprises his role as Lone Starr, and Daphne Zuniga returns as Queen Vespa. George Wyner is also returning as Colonel Sandurz.
Mel Brooks will appear in front of the camera again, reprising his roles as Yogurt and President Skroob, while also serving as a producer on the project.
The sequel introduces a new set of cast members to the franchise, including:
- Josh Gad
- Keke Palmer as Destiny
- Anthony Carrigan
- Lewis Pullman as Starburst
The casting of Lewis Pullman carries a personal connection, as he is the real-life son of Bill Pullman. In the film, his character, Starburst, is the son of Lone Starr and Queen Vespa.
Production and Creative Team
Josh Greenbaum, known for Strays
and Barb and Star Go to Vista Del Mar
, has taken over directing duties. The screenplay was written by a team consisting of Josh Gad, Benji Samit, and Dan Hernandez.

The film is produced by a collective including Mel Brooks, Josh Gad, Josh Greenbaum, Kevin Salter, Jeb Brody, Brian Grazer, and Ron Howard. Production companies involved in the project include Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer, Imagine Entertainment, and Brooksfilms.
While the film will continue to primarily parody Star Wars, as its predecessor did, it is also intended to parody other popular media.
Development History
The path to a sequel spanned several decades. In a 2013 interview, Rick Moranis mentioned that he and Brooks had discussed a potential follow-up, with Moranis suggesting the title Spaceballs III: The Search for Spaceballs II
. However, the project did not move forward at that time because the two were unable to structure a viable deal.
In February 2015, Brooks expressed a desire to create a sequel and indicated he hoped it would be released after the next Star Wars film, specifically hoping that Moranis would return to the role of Dark Helmet.
This announcement comes as Mel Brooks approaches a significant personal milestone, as he turns 100 years old in June 2026.
