SpaceX launched the final three O3b mPower satellites for SES on Sunday, completing a medium Earth orbit network designed to provide enterprise-grade internet connectivity to ships, airlines, and governments.
Falcon 9 Completes Decade-Long SES Deployment
The Falcon 9 rocket lifted off from Cape Canaveral during an 87-minute window that opened at 2:49 p.m. Eastern time. The mission carried spacecraft designated F11, F12, and F13, marking the conclusion of a project that took more than a decade to finish after Boeing and SES initially contracted SpaceX for the work.
Orbiting at Five Thousand Miles
Unlike SpaceX’s Starlink constellation, which operates in low Earth orbit at roughly 340 miles up, the O3b mPower satellites fly in medium Earth orbit at an altitude of approximately 5,000 miles.

While this is more than ten times higher than Starlink’s operational shell, it sits well below traditional geostationary satellites stationed at 22,000 miles.
This middle position allows SES to cover the globe with far fewer spacecraft. The entire network relies on just 13 satellites to deliver quick, steady service that typically requires thousands of units in lower orbits.
Enterprise Focus and Maritime Markets
While Starlink focuses on volume through direct-to-consumer dishes, RV setups, homes, small businesses, and growing aviation and maritime markets, O3b mPower skips individual consumers entirely.
The medium Earth orbit system sells enterprise-grade connectivity to cruise lines, airlines, offshore energy operators, telecommunications companies needing backhaul, and government entities, provisioning services more like a dedicated circuit.
The two systems already complement each other in commercial deployments. Sunday’s launch finishes the medium orbit half of that dual-network approach.
Booster Milestone and Droneship Landing
Sunday’s flight added another milestone to the Falcon 9 launch manifest, which already included 28 prior trips for the specific booster used.

This specific rocket previously flew two crewed Axiom missions, the European Space Agency’s Euclid telescope, and 22 separate Starlink batches.
Following stage separation, the mission targeted a landing on the SpaceX droneship A Shortfall of Gravitas. That touchdown attempt was set to mark the 661st successful landing of a Falcon booster to date, underscoring how routine heavy-cadence launches remain alongside SpaceX’s deployment of its own massive low Earth orbit internet infrastructure.
