Four astronauts representing three space agencies successfully launched aboard a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket on Oct. 1, heading toward the International Space Station from Cape Canaveral Space Force Station, space.com reported.
The mission, designated Crew-13, lifted off from Space Launch Complex 40 at 11:10 a.m. EDT after morning weather forecasts initially indicated a lower chance of favorable conditions, according to mynews13.com.
The cheers from onlookers were no match for the Falcon 9 rocket’s mighty engines as it cut through the sky, mynews13.com noted of the liftoff.
Falcon 9 Booster Lands After Crew Liftoff
The four-person crew climbed into SpaceX’s Dragon capsule named Grace, a spacecraft previously utilized for Axiom Space’s private Ax-4 mission the prior year, mynews13.com reported.
Following stage separation, the Falcon 9 booster successfully touched down at Landing Zone 40, wesh.com stated.
Meteorological conditions at the cape fluctuated ahead of the flight, with the 45th Weather Squadron initially giving the liftoff a 55% chance of favorable weather before conditions briefly dipped and later climbed to a 60% probability by launch time, mynews13.com reported.
Multinational Crew Composition
The crew comprises members from NASA, the Canadian Space Agency, and Russia’s Roscosmos, fox35orlando.com reported.
NASA astronauts Jessica Watkins and Luke Delaney serve as the spacecraft’s commander and pilot, respectively, wesh.com reported.
Watkins previously spent 170 days in space during NASA’s Crew-4 mission in 2022, marking her second trip to the orbiting laboratory, according to mynews13.com.
Delaney grew up in DeBary, earned his bachelor’s degree from the University of North Florida, and received his master’s degree from the Naval Postgraduate School, wesh.com and fox35orlando.com reported.
The mission is Delaney’s first spaceflight, fox35orlando.com noted.
The remaining seats are filled by mission specialists Joshua Kutryk of the Canadian Space Agency and Sergey Teteryatnikov of Roscosmos, fox35orlando.com reported.
Canadian Space Agency officials acknowledged that Kutryk would miss the birth of his third child during the flight while expressing support for the mission, fox35orlando.com stated.
Expedition 75 Science Objectives
Once docked, Crew-13 will join the Expedition 75 team to support station maintenance, operations, and scientific investigations designed to prepare humans for future exploration missions to the Moon and Mars, wesh.com reported.
Research during the roughly six-month mission will examine how human bodies respond to extended periods in microgravity, wesh.com stated.
Projects include the B-Complex study to explore whether a daily B-vitamin supplement can reduce or prevent spaceflight-associated neuro-ocular syndrome affecting astronauts’ eyes and vision, wesh.com reported.
NASA is also partnering with the European Space Agency on an investigation called Venous Haemostasis to study blood clots in microgravity and reduce the frequency of required blood draws, mynews13.com reported.
Other work will evaluate manual piloting and lunar-landing simulations to test how astronauts handle landing after long durations in microgravity, investigating whether refresher training shortly before touchdown strengthens decision-making, mynews13.com noted.

Dragon Aims for Fastest Launch to Dock History
Dragon was expected to dock with the International Space Station’s Harmony module at 7 p.m. on Oct. 1, less than eight hours after liftoff, which NASA indicated would be the fastest launch-to-dock in ISS history, fox35orlando.com reported.
Crew-13 is scheduled to spend approximately six months aboard the complex, taking over for the Crew-12 team, fox35orlando.com reported.
Crew-12 launched on Feb. 13, replacing four previous crew members who cut their mission short due to a medical issue, according to wesh.com.
