SpaceX has completed the first fueling of its Starship Version 3 (V3) megarocket, marking a critical milestone ahead of the vehicle’s first test flight. The company conducted a successful launch rehearsal on May 11, 2026, at its Starbase site in South Texas.

During the rehearsal, SpaceX performed a flight-like countdown and loaded more than 5,000 metric tonnes (11+ million pounds) of liquid oxygen and liquid methane propellant into the fully stacked vehicle.

Confirming the milestone in a post on X, SpaceX stated: Launch rehearsal complete. During a flight-like countdown, more than 5,000 metric tonnes (11+ million pounds) of propellant were loaded on the fully stacked Starship and Super Heavy V3 vehicles for the first time.

Technical Specifications and Upgrades

The Starship V3 is the newest iteration of the spacecraft, designed to be more powerful and efficient than previous versions. Standing at approximately 408 feet (124.4 meters), it has set a new record as the tallest rocket ever built, exceeding the height of Starship V2 by 4 feet (1.2 meters).

Several significant hardware modifications distinguish the V3 from its predecessors:

  • The Super Heavy booster and Starship upper stage now utilize higher-thrust, more efficient Raptor engines.
  • A new reusable lattice-like structure has been integrated at the top of the booster to facilitate hot staging.
  • The first stage now features three modified grid fins, reduced from the previous four, to assist in returning the booster to Earth for recovery and reuse.

the vehicle has recently completed a test where all its Raptor engines fired in a full duration, full thrust burn for the first time.

Strategic Objectives and NASA Integration

The development of Starship V3 is a step toward shifting the program from iterative testing to operational utility in space. A primary goal for this version is to experiment with in-orbit refueling, a capability required for missions extending beyond low-Earth orbit.

Mastering refueling will allow Starship to serve as landers for NASA’s Artemis program, enabling flights to the Moon. Beyond the lunar missions, SpaceX intends to use Starship to help humanity settle Mars and to complete the deployment of its Starlink broadband megaconstellation.

Development Timeline and Launch Target

The Starship program has followed an iterative development path since its debut in April 2023. Since that initial flight, which ended in an explosion, the company has flown 10 suborbital test missions, with the most recent occurring in October 2025. The two most recent flights were reported as completely successful.

While SpaceX has not officially announced a target launch date for the V3, maritime warning notices issued late May 11, 2026, indicate that the company is targeting a launch attempt on Tuesday, May 19, 2026.

Before the flight can proceed, workers must complete the installation of hardware for the rocket’s self-destruct system.
