Spain has emerged as a leading destination for Americans embracing the digital nomad lifestyle since the introduction of the Spanish Digital Nomad Visa in 2023. A recent survey sheds light on the primary reasons behind this growing trend, highlighting Spain’s appeal for remote workers seeking a change of scenery and lifestyle.
The Expatsi website’s survey revealed that over 113,000 Americans are considering relocating to work remotely abroad. Of those, 68% favor European destinations, with Portugal and Spain topping the list. Many of these individuals are not short-term travelers but professionals seeking to establish themselves in Spain for several years. The survey indicates that 44% are professionals with partners, and 39% fall between the ages of 25 and 44, with a notable number between 55 and 65. Interestingly, 30% intend to remain indefinitely, blurring the lines between digital nomad and expatriate.
So, what makes Spain such a magnet for American digital nomads seeking remote work and a new life?
One significant factor is the perception of a more stable political climate. According to the survey, 56% of respondents feel the U.S. has become too conservative, and 53% cite political polarization as a major concern. While Spain has its own political challenges, many view it as more stable than the current U.S. landscape.
Safety is another key consideration. Nearly half (48%) of those surveyed wont to escape the threat of gun violence. Statistics show that the U.S. has a significantly higher rate of gun crime compared to Spain, making Spain an attractive option for those prioritizing personal safety.
Universal healthcare is also a major draw, with 68% expressing a desire to live in a country with public healthcare. Spain’s healthcare system, ranked 8th globally by the Health Care Index, offers an appealing choice to the U.S. system. while access for digital nomads may require social security contributions or private insurance, the costs are generally lower than in the U.S.
Moreover, Spain’s progressive stance on LGBTQIA+ rights is a significant factor for many. Almost half (48%) of respondents cited ”different freedoms” as a reason for wanting to leave the U.S. A majority (60%) are looking for a country where homosexual relations are accepted, and 56% prioritize same-sex marriage legality. Spain legalized gay marriage in 2005 and is known for its open and accepting surroundings.
Language also plays a role. Over half (51%) of those surveyed are willing to learn Spanish, surpassing the interest in learning French, Italian, or German. The prevalence of Spanish speakers in the U.S. makes Spain a more accessible choice for many.
Spain’s diverse landscapes appeal to many Americans. A majority (55%) desire beaches and coastlines, while 47% seek mountains. spain offers both, with numerous Blue Flag beaches and mountain ranges like the Pyrenees and sierra Nevada.
In addition, 58% of respondents said they wanted to move to a country where they had the freedom to determine their own gender. Spain passed its Trans Law in early 2023, which recognizes the right of trans people to self-determine their gender identity.
What’s next
As the digital nomad trend continues to grow, Spain is likely to remain a popular destination for Americans seeking a better quality of life, greater personal freedoms, and a more stable environment. The Spanish Digital Nomad Visa makes it easier than ever for remote workers to experience all that Spain has to offer.
