Spain Train Collision: 21 Dead After High-Speed Train Crash
At least 21 people died this Sunday, January 18th, in southern Spain, around 25 were seriously injured, and an unspecified number could remain trapped after the derailment and subsequent collision between two high-speed trains in the municipality of Adamuz, in the province of Córdoba.
The accident occurred when a train from the company Iryo, destined for Madrid, derailed just over an hour after leaving Malaga and invaded the adjacent track,on which another convoy from the state-owned Renfe Alvia was traveling, which was making the route Madrid-Huelva and which also derailed.
The Minister of Transport, Óscar Puente, explained that the last carriages of the Iryo train that derailed in Adamuz invaded the opposite track, on which a high-speed Renfe train was circulating at that moment.
After a “terrible” impact, two carriages of the latter convoy were thrown off, causing an as yet undetermined number of fatalities. “The most important thing now is to assist the victims,” he added.
Puente is following the details of the accident from the H24 Network Management centre of the state-owned railway Adif, in Madrid, and from there he warned that the latest details coming from Córdoba is “very serious“.
