The Spanish women’s national basketball team has learned its group and opponents for the 2026 FIBA Women’s Basketball World Cup, which will be held in Germany from September 4 to 13, marking their return to the global stage eight years after their last appearance.
Spain secured qualification through the Pre-World Cup tournament in Puerto Rico, winning all three matches with dominant performances: a 99-50 victory over New Zealand, followed by 84-50 against Senegal and a 91-52 win over host nation Puerto Rico to clinch one of the two available berths.
The draw, conducted on Tuesday, April 21, 2026, in Berlin, placed Spain in Group A alongside host nation Germany, Japan, and Mali. All four teams earned their spots through qualification tournaments, with Germany qualifying automatically as hosts.
Spain will face Germany again in the group stage, as they did in EuroBasket 2025, though this time the host city is Berlin instead of Hamburg. The tournament will be held exclusively in Berlin, unlike the continental championship which was hosted across multiple cities.
The full group composition for the 2026 FIBA Women’s Basketball World Cup is as follows:
- Group A: Germany, Spain, Japan, Mali
- Group B: Hungary, South Korea, Nigeria, France
- Group C: Belgium, Australia, Puerto Rico, Turkey
- Group D: United States, Czech Republic, Italy, China
Group D features the defending champions, the United States, who will face the Czech Republic, Italy, and China. Group C includes reigning European champions Belgium, competing against Australia, Puerto Rico, and Turkey.
Spain’s return to the World Cup comes after missing the 2022 edition. Their last appearance was in 2018, when the tournament was held in Spain and the team won the bronze medal. That performance marked the culmination of the so-called ‘Golden Generation,’ which included a silver medal at the 2016 Olympics, three European titles (2013, 2017, 2019), and continental runner-up finishes in 2023 and 2025.
The Spanish women’s basketball program has accumulated 16 medals since their first European Championship gold in 1993. The current resurgence is attributed to a new generation of talent, highlighted by their historic performance in the 2026 WNBA Draft.
