Updated June 2,2025
Max Verstappen has conceded that his collision with George Russell during the Spanish Grand Prix “was not right.” the Red Bull driver made the admission on social media, a day after the race.
Verstappen received a 10-second penalty for causing the incident. He initially appeared to allow Russell to pass, but then accelerated into the side of the Mercedes at Turn 5.
Initially defiant in post-race interviews, Verstappen’s Monday statement marked a change in tone. He attributed the incident to frustration stemming from earlier events in the race.

“We had an exciting strategy and good race in Barcelona, till the safety car came out,” Verstappen stated. “Our tire choice to the end and some moves after the safety car restart fuelled my frustration, leading to a move that was not right and shouldn’t have happened.”
The incident occurred after a safety car period triggered by Kimi Antonelli’s stranded Mercedes. Verstappen, who had already used his preferred tire compounds, was forced to use hard tires for the restart.
Charles Leclerc and Russell, behind Verstappen, opted for soft tires, giving them a performance advantage. Leclerc quickly overtook Verstappen, and Russell attempted a pass, resulting in contact.
Stewards investigated the incident, ultimately penalizing Verstappen. His engineer,Gianpiero Lambiase, had urged him to cede position to Russell to avoid further penalties before the collision.
The penalty points from the incident leave Verstappen just one point away from a race ban.
The tenth-place finish in the Spanish Grand Prix has also impacted Verstappen’s championship hopes, leaving him 49 points behind leader Oscar Piastri.
