A Brush with Disaster Over Chicago
The Czech sports team, known as the Spartans, experienced a harrowing ordeal during a flight from New York to Chicago in late December.A severe snowstorm forced the captain to deviate from the planned route and attempt a hazardous landing at Chicago’s O’Hare International Airport due to critically low fuel levels. Vojta, a member of the expedition, recounted the experience, stating, “The captain, instead of escaping from the terrifying storm, had to continue on course and choose a very dangerous landing in Chicago, because he already lacked fuel.Fortunately, the pilot was great, he handled the emergency and we all felt like we were reborn.”
The conditions upon arrival were equally challenging. Václav Mašek described the difficulties disembarking, noting, “We were tired and so weary that we fell down the swinging stairs. There was a huge wind and the snow was blowing so hard that we couldn’t stay on our feet even on the ground.”
Chicago’s Czech Community Offers Refuge
Despite the difficult landing, the Spartans found immediate support from the Czech community in Chicago. Compatriots were waiting to assist the team, immediately inviting them to a Christmas Eve dinner at a local Czech restaurant. Mašek recalled the initial shock and gradual recovery, saying, “Our compatriots were waiting for us and they immediately took us to a Christmas Eve dinner in a Czech restaurant. However, we couldn’t eat or drink anything for a long time, and only as time went on did we start talking about life in Prague, about the terrible flight, and finally they gave a schnitzel.”
The warmth of the Chicago Czechs extended beyond a single meal. players and officials were offered accommodation with local families, a gesture that delighted coach Václav Ježek. The team dispersed among the homes of keen hosts, finding respite and care.
A Diet of Hospitality and Weight Gain
The Spartans were generously treated to customary Czech cuisine by their hosts – a diet rich in pork, goose, duck, and dumplings, accompanied by Pilsner beer. While appreciated, this change in diet had a noticeable effect on the athletes. Vladimír Táborský humorously noted, “The hosts fattened us up with traditional Czech food, i.e. pork, geese, ducks, dumplings, and we drank Pilsner beer. The consequences of the disordered diet were recorded by the inexorable weight gain. in the week in which we played only one match, that was three extra kilograms.” Táborský added that coach Ježek was not pleased with the private accommodation due to its impact on the team’s physical condition.
Onward to South America
after a week of recovery and hospitality in Chicago, the Spartans resumed their tour on New Year’s Day, traveling to Mexico, Chile, and Argentina. The nearly two-month trip was filled with both positive and stressful experiences, but the flight from New York to chicago remained the most memorable – and frightening - event of the expedition.
