JJ Spaun Seizes U.S. Open Title After Dramatic Final round
Updated june 16, 2025
JJ Spaun claimed the 125th U.S. Open championship at Oakmont Country Club after a roller-coaster final round. Spaun, whose role as a contender seemed in jeopardy after bogeying four of the frist five holes, rallied to secure his first major title.
A clutch birdie on the par-4 17th, where he drove the ball within 17 feet and two-putted, propelled him past Robert McIntyre. McIntyre, of Scotland, posted a final round of 68 to take the clubhouse led at one-over-par.
Spaun sealed the victory with a remarkable 65-foot putt on the 18th, finishing with a final-round 72. Overnight leader Sam Burns and Adam Scott faltered in their final holes, while Tyrrell Hatton briefly held a share of the lead.
A weather delay of nearly two hours threatened to push the tournament to Monday. Scottie Scheffler finished the tournament at four-over-par after shooting an even-par 70.
Rory McIlroy carded a 67, his best round of the week, to finish in the top 20. McIlroy said he is now focused on the Open Championship next month.
“look, I climbed my Everest in April, and I think after you do something like that, you’ve got to make your way back down, and you’ve got to look for another mountain to climb,” McIlroy told RTÉ Sport’s greg Allen.
What’s next
mcilroy is looking to regain his focus and make a strong showing at the open Championship next month.
