SPD Leadership Backs Scholz Amid Calls for Pistorius Candidacy Ahead of Early Elections
SPD Leadership and Chancellor Scholz’s Struggles
The co-leader of Germany’s Social Democrats (SPD), Lars Klingbeil, emphasized the need for the party to unite in support of Chancellor Olaf Scholz. As Germany approaches early elections, Klingbeil stated, “Olaf Scholz is the chancellor. Everyone in the SPD is clear that we stand behind him.” He urged the party to focus on campaign content rather than personnel issues.
Despite this support, Scholz faces declining approval ratings. There are increasing calls within the SPD for Defence Minister Boris Pistorius to become the party’s candidate for chancellor in the upcoming elections, scheduled for February 23. Reports indicate that several SPD members in local, state, and Bundestag positions advocate for Pistorius.
Klingbeil voiced hope that SPD leadership would quickly address the party’s crisis and low poll numbers. Current public opinion shows the conservative CDU/CSU bloc leading with 32%, while the SPD trails at 16%.
While many party members favor Pistorius as the candidate, Klingbeil, co-leader Saskia Esken, and general secretary Matthias Miersch remain committed to Scholz. Scholz has not suggested stepping down, and it is unlikely that party leaders will nominate another candidate without his approval. An agreement on the SPD’s chancellor candidate is expected by November 30, with an official nomination process beginning on January 11.
