Speaker of Parliament Anita Among has firmly dismissed speculation about her presidential ambitions, stating she has no desire, patience, or interest to pursue the presidency and describing such talk as “rubbish and nonsensical.”
Speaking during the handover of a UGX 100 million contribution through the purchase of kits in support of General Muhoozi Kainerugaba’s 52nd Birthday Run, Among reiterated her satisfaction with her current role and confirmed she has no plans to seek higher office.
The charity run, scheduled for April 26, 2026, is held under the theme “Run for Charity, Run for Hope” and aims to raise funds for vulnerable children.
Among acknowledged her political journey is tied to President Yoweri Museveni, saying she would have been “a nobody” without his support, and pledged continued backing for both the President and General Muhoozi Kainerugaba, the Chief of Defence Forces.
She revealed her intention to retire from elective politics in 2031, stating she has already “overachieved” in her political career and will support the candidate endorsed by President Museveni as his successor.
When questioned about presidential suitability, Among said she does not believe she possesses the temperament or skill set required for the presidency, noting, “I don’t even know how to cock a gun,” and questioning how she could be considered for the role given such limitations.
She also thanked General Muhoozi Kainerugaba for endorsing her to retain the Speakership and Thomas Tayebwa for his support in securing the deputy speakership, saying the endorsements mean a great deal to her and her team.
Among emphasized that she and her colleagues do not take the support for granted and pledged to work to build trust, strengthen the Patriotic League, and ensure they do not disappoint General Muhoozi.
