Animated Films and Divorce: Exploring New Themes in Spellbound

Animated films rarely address themes of parental separation and divorce. Unlike live-action movies, which often use these themes for humor, animation has avoided this subject. Vicky Jenson, co-director of Shrek, points out that Disney often opts to kill off parents rather than depict separation. This avoidance makes the topic of parents not living together a taboo subject in animation.

Jenson’s new film, Spellbound, breaks this trend. In it, a princess named Ellian must find a way to restore her parents, who have been turned into monsters by a spell. This allegory reflects the journey of fixing a broken family.

When looking for distribution partners, Jenson faced challenges. While many praised the film’s message, they ended up withdrawing interest. After approaching multiple studios, Spellbound found a home with Netflix, which premiered the film on November 22. Jenson appreciates Netflix’s willingness to support stories that push boundaries, especially since theaters often focus on superhero movies.

In Spellbound, Ellian, voiced by Rachel Zegler, seeks a cure for her parents, Queen Ellsmere and King Solon, who are now monsters. She must keep their situation a secret from the people of Lumbria. As the truth emerges, Ellian embarks on a quest to break the curse. She learns that even if she succeeds, her family may never return to normal.

To ensure authentic representation of Ellian’s feelings towards her monstrous parents, Jenson consulted family psychologists and therapists who specialize in divorce. They confirmed that children often feel responsible for their parents’ issues and struggle to understand the changes happening around them.

Spellbound offers a fresh perspective on family dynamics and addresses the emotional challenges faced by children in the midst of separation. It is an important step in animated storytelling.
