Hongcheon-gun Health Center successfully operated the “Healthy Table Project: One Meal at a Time” in the first half of this year, aiming to foster self-reliance in household chores through healthy and easy cooking education for local elderly men.

The program, held at the Bukbang-myeon Health Lifestyle Support Center, consisted of a training and practical course covering essential topics such as:

  • Guidelines for eating in old age
  • Using nutrition labels when purchasing food
  • Utilizing cooking utensils effectively
  • Preparing ingredients for healthy meals
  • Preparing healthy, low-salt, low-sugar dishes

Participants had the opportunity to taste the dishes they made together and share their thoughts, fostering a sense of community and camaraderie.

The program received overwhelmingly positive feedback from the participating seniors, who reported gaining confidence in cooking and experiencing a sense of pride in preparing meals for their families. One participant noted, “I felt a sense of pride in cooking for the first time and eating it with my family, and my daily life became more enjoyable.”

Due to the program’s high satisfaction rate, the center will recruit participants for the second round in October. A center official expressed, “It was rewarding to see the seniors gain confidence and enjoy themselves through cooking education. We hope that many residents will participate in the education program scheduled for the second half of the year, which will help prevent chronic diseases and lead to a healthy old age through healthy eating habits.”
