Political Career and Prime Ministership
Vladimír Špidla previously served as the Prime Minister of the Czech Republic from July 12, 2002, to July 26, 2004. During this period, he also served as the leader of the Czech Social Democratic Party from April 7, 2001, until his departure from the premiership in July 2004.
Prior to becoming Prime Minister, Špidla held several high-ranking government positions. From July 22, 1998, to July 12, 2002, he served as the First Deputy Prime Minister and the Minister of Labour and Social Affairs under Prime Minister Miloš Zeman.
His legislative experience includes serving as a member of the Chamber of Deputies from January 1, 1996, to August 31, 2004.
European Commission and Advisory Roles
Following his term as Prime Minister, Špidla transitioned to international governance. He served as the European Commissioner for Employment, Social Affairs and Equal Opportunities from November 22, 2004, to February 9, 2010, serving under President José Manuel Barroso.
Špidla later returned to a domestic advisory capacity, serving as the chief adviser to Prime Minister Bohuslav Sobotka from 2014 to 2017.
Early Career and Education
Špidla entered local politics in his hometown of Jindřichův Hradec following the Velvet Revolution. During the period between 1991 and 1996, he served as the director of the district labour office.
He studied history at Charles University in Prague, where he authored a thesis titled Založení Živnostenské banky, which focused on the establishment of the Entrepreneurial Bank.
