A state-of-teh-art theater was dedicated to Steven Spielberg at Universal’s
L.A.studio lot thursday night.The event took place near the theme park’s
Jaws and Jurassic Park attractions.
NBCUniversal Entertainment chairman Donna Langley lauded Spielberg’s impact
on the studio and Hollywood. She called the theater a place founded on his
legacy and the future hopes and dreams of storytellers.
Comcast CEO Brian Roberts and president Mike Cavanagh joined executives,
celebrities and Spielberg collaborators to celebrate. Attendees included
John Travolta, Vin Diesel, Seth Rogen, Colman Domingo, Dakota Fanning, Jeff
Goldblum, Goonies stars Ke Huy Quan and Jeff Cohen, Jon M. chu,
Daniels and Kevin Williamson.
Spielberg, who has worked with Universal for over 50 years, described the
studio’s current state as a rebirth. He quipped that this was not a
reference to Jurassic World Rebirth, which he produced.He
recalled the studio’s past as a time of ”many fathers,” but now feels back
in a loving family.
Spielberg saeid the rebirth is about the belief in people working together
as a family to make good things happen. He added that he has no plans to
retire and is making many movies.
In a separate interview, Spielberg mentioned his desire to make a Western
film someday.
Spielberg’s career began with 1971’s Duel. He has as directed
over 30 feature films and produced hundreds more, many for Universal. The
studio gave Spielberg, then in his mid-20s, his first big break.
The dedication occurred shortly after the 50th anniversary of
Jaws. Spielberg’s other early Universal films include 1979’s
1941,1982’s E.T. the Extraterrestrial, 1989’s
Always and 1993’s Jurassic Park. His company, Amblin,
has remained on the Universal lot even as he made films for other studios.
Jaws, E.T. and Jurassic Park became the
highest-grossing films of their times. In 1994, Spielberg won his first
best picture Oscar for Universal’s Schindler’s List.
Spielberg has been busy shooting a top-secret film and has not been able to
focus on the Jaws anniversary. He plans to focus on it in the
early fall when an exhibit is installed at the Academy museum.
Guests at the dedication were shown footage from the untitled event film,
Spielberg’s first adventure genre film as 2018’s Ready Player
one. The film has alien and sci-fi elements and is based on a story
by Spielberg. The cast includes Emily blunt and Josh O’Connor, who were
seen trying to escape government agents.
an exclusive exhibit featured props,costumes and behind-the-scenes photos,
including clapper boards from Schindler’s List and
The Fabelmans,the bicycles from E.T., and the alien’s
animatronic arm.
Guests like Rogen, Chu and the Daniels visited the exhibit and spoke with
Spielberg. Chu showed spielberg his E.T. socks and thanked him for
inspiring his love of movies.Spielberg said he is still amazed he gets to
pursue his moviemaking dream.
The 250-seat Steven Spielberg Theater is in The Commons, an 84,000
square-foot building resembling a spinning film reel. It is indeed part of the
Campus Project, an eco-friendly redesign that Spielberg helped design, as
he has with Universal’s theme parks.
What’s next
Spielberg is currently filming an untitled project with alien and sci-fi
elements, slated for future release.
